Julie Hooven received her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois in 1990. She graduated summa cum laude with a double major in political science and sociology. While at the University of Illinois, Julie was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and earned the University of Illinois Bronze Tablet Award, graduating in the top 3% of her class. Julie attended law school at Loyola University in Chicago, where she served on the law review and graduated in 1993 cum laude. While at Loyola, Julie was a recipient of the American Jurisprudence Award in Moot Court and the Loyola University Academic Achievement Award in Health Law.

Julie has spent her legal career with Stone & Johnson, Chartered firm and its predecessor since starting with the firm as a law clerk in 1992. She is currently a shareholder in the firm. She is admitted to practice before the Illinois Supreme Court, United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, United States District Court, Eastern District of Wisconsin, United States District Court, Northern District of Alabama and has pro hac vice admissions to practice in the courts of numerous states.

For the past 20 years, Julie has focused her law practice on insurance coverage disputes and litigation. Over the years, Julie has worked as a team with various claims professionals and underwriters throughout the country, consulting on claim investigation, drafting reservation of rights and denial letters, assisting with historical policy reconstruction, preparing coverage opinions, pursuing equitable contribution claims, attending mediations and litigating disputes.

Julie’s specialty is environmental property damage claims, and she regularly works with environmental consultants, claims professionals and their insureds to ensure that selected remedial approaches are comprehensive yet cost effective. When environmental property damage claims spawn litigation, Julie has pursued cost recovery actions for insureds, subrogation claims for their insurers, and has defended potentially responsible parties in a variety of settings in multiple states. Having worked closely with insurance professionals for over 20 years, Julie understands that insurance is above all a business that must be reasonably profitable yet accountable to insureds, reinsurers and regulators.
